Spring on the Farm: Fresh Starts and New Life at Grayhurst

Spring has finally arrived at Grayhurst Farm, and with it comes a season full of fresh starts, hard work, and hope for the months ahead. After a long winter, there’s nothing quite like the return of warm sunshine, green shoots, and the promise of good things growing.

Welcoming Our Beef Cows

One of the most exciting parts of our spring is the arrival of our beef cows. They’ve settled in well, and we’re already enjoying the energy they bring to the farm. Watching them graze peacefully is a sure sign that the season is changing. These animals play an important role in our sustainable farming system, and we’re committed to raising them with care and respect.

A New Beginning for Our Bees

Unfortunately, not everything made it through the winter. We were disappointed to discover that none of our bee colonies survived the cold months. It’s a tough reminder of how fragile these important pollinators can be. But spring is also about renewal, and we’ve fully replaced our hives with new colonies. The new bees are busy settling in and starting their work—pollinating our crops and helping our farm thrive. We’re hopeful for a strong season ahead for them.

Planting and Growing

Our fields and gardens are already bursting with life. We’ve been busy planting and tending to a wide variety of crops that we’re excited to bring to your table this year. Here’s what’s growing:

Tomatoes and Peppers – always a favourite, these summer staples are getting a strong start in the warmth of the greenhouse before heading to the field.

Garlic – planted last fall, our garlic is pushing up strong green shoots and looking great.

Kale and Swiss Chard – these hearty greens are loving the cooler spring weather and adding beautiful colour to our garden rows.

Beets – we’re looking forward to a great harvest of these earthy, sweet roots.

Rhubarb – already thriving in the early-season sun, rhubarb is one of the first signs of spring harvest, and we can’t wait to start baking with it.

We’re so grateful for the chance to do this work, and for the support of our community as we grow and raise food with care. Spring is always a time of hard work, but also of excitement and renewal—and we’re looking forward to sharing the results with you at markets, on the farm, and at your table.

Thank you for being part of the Grayhurst Farm story!
